Kennedy Agyapong, Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) has revealed that the unlawful mining actions, often called galamsey, in Ghana usually are not solely the actions of politicians but additionally contain conventional leaders.
In an interview with 3News, Agyapong highlighted that sure chiefs are deeply concerned within the unlawful mining operations, alongside politicians.
He recounted an occasion from his constituency the place he encountered people possessing mining tools. When questioned, they admitted to paying a neighborhood chief GH₵2,000 and giving him a sheep in alternate for permission to mine within the space.
Agyapong emphasised that fixing the difficulty requires boldly acknowledging the reality, noting, “The problem is from the constituencies. I can also tell you that some of the chiefs are involved, not just politicians.” He added that patriotism and honesty are essential to addressing the menace, urging all stakeholders to take accountability.
