Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a lecturer at the Central University, has slammed the Electoral Commission over its response to the NDC National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, regarding his allegations against the Commission.

Sammy Gyamfi has accused the EC of foul play towards the upcoming Assin North by-election alleging the Commission wants to smuggle an NPP parliamentary aspirant into the election.

He claims the ruling party is in collaboration with the EC to insert a certain Charles Opoku’s name into the voters’ register.

Mr. Gyamfi argued that the NPP parliamentary candidate is not a registered voter in the Assin North constituency.

“We are closely monitoring this situation and shall take every legitimate step to ensure that this illegal plot is not carried out by the Electoral Commission and their collaborators in the NPP,”  he stressed in a statement.

But the EC, in reply, finds the accusations baseless stating “over the years Sammy Gyamfi and his party have put out false claims aimed at maligning the integrity of the EC. This was evident in their petition to the Supreme Court after the 2020 Elections alleging that they had won the Elections”.

“It is well known that they could not provide evidence in Court to support their allegations. This current allegation is no different. It is baseless and unfounded and a figment of the imagination of the National Communication Officer. We call on all well meaning Ghanaians to ignore it.

“Ghana’s democracy has come of age and we call on Sammy Gyamfi to exercise maturity, decorum and truth in his discussions on the EC. We urge him to go out and campaign and leave the EC alone,” the Commission added.

Tackling the issue during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah faulted the EC for over their statement which, to him, was very personal against the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He advised the Electoral Commissioners to bottle up their emotions stressing the Commission is supposed to be a referee in Ghana’s elections and so found it distasteful for them to come at the NDC.

To him, the Commission should have directed their message directly to Sammy Gyamfi as an individual without bringing the NDC into the matter.

“Ghanaians have vested you with their power to conduct elections. Don’t be emotional,” Dr. Otchere-Ankrah fired at EC.
