A businesswoman, who recruited and trafficked a woman from Ghana to Kurdistan, Iraq, has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment by the Accra Circuit Court.

Beatrice Ofori, convict, is said to have received $4,500 and $700 from an agency to recruit and traffic the victim to Iraq with the promise of securing her (victim) seamstress job.

However, the victim ended up being a domestic servant, who suffered inhumane treatment.

Charged with human trafficking, Beatrice pleaded not guilty, but the court presided over by Mrs Christina Cann, found her (Beatrice) guilty and sentenced her accordingly.

Prosecuting, Superintendent of Immigration John Bernard Otoo, said that Beatrice claimed to be a travel and tour operator in Accra.

Sup Otoo said the complainant was the victim’s mother, and that Beatrice, the victim (name withheld) and the complainant were neighbours and family friends at Klagon in Accra.

The prosecution said on September 13, 2022, the complainant lodged a complaint with the Anti-Human Smuggling and In Person Unit (AHSTIP) of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) that she had received a distress call from her daughter, whom she had not heard from about 11 months, that she was in slavery in Kurdistan, Iraq.

Sup Otoo said investigations revealed that Beatrice had recruited the victim and transported her to Kurdistan, Iraq, under the pretence of providing her work as a seamstress, but she ended up as a domestic servant, under harsh conditions.

The prosecution said when the victim arrived in Kurdistan, she was made to remit $700 to Beatrice, and went through inhumane treatment, including sexual harassment and denial of food.

Sup Otoo said later, the victim made a phone call to her mother informing her (mother) about her predicament.

The court heard that the victim also called Beatrice on phone requesting to return to Ghana.

Sup Otoo said “it was at this point that the victim was made aware that an agency paid $4,500 to Beatrice.”

The prosecution said the AHSTIP Unit of the GIS asked Beatrice to ensure the repatriation of the victim to Ghana as part of her bail condition.

Sup Otoo said Beatrice purchased a Qatar Airways ticket for the victim to Ghana, and on September 27, 2022, the AHSTIP Unit received the victim at the Kotoka International Airport.
