Bundesliga top scorer
Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of Chelsea’s historic spending spree throughout the 2022/23 season is the fact that the Stamford Bridge side still have an extremely unbalanced squad. After spending no less than €612 million on new players – more so than any other club in the history of the sport – there are still some notable holes in the squad that Mauricio Pochettino inherited on June 1.
For example, while the London club can call upon no less than eight central midfielders and four left-backs, Chelsea can’t actually name a senior, proven No.9 among their ranks. Of course, there are some potential prospects like Armando Broja and David Datro Fofana and one could maybe suggest that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have led the line once upon a time, there’s little doubt that Pochettino will need to find a new solution to his attacking problems ahead of the new season.
RB Leipzig’s talisman – Nkunku in the Bundesliga
Which, intriguingly, makes the signing of RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku all the more intriguing. After passing his medical with the club late last year and technically completing the move in December, the French striker is set to be announced as a Chelsea player in the coming days. And, while Nkunku may not be everyone’s idea of a striker, the forward may actually prove to be the perfect talisman for Chelsea next season.
Highest transfer spending in a single season – Chelsea surpass Barça
First and foremost, Nkunku is an outstanding goal scorer. Since he made the move to the Bundesliga side, the 25-year-old forward has bagged no less than 70 goals in 172 games across all competitions. When we narrow that down to the German top-flight it works out at 47 goals. In that period, only five players have scored more Bundesliga goals than the player many still consider to be a winger.
That, of course, is because Nkunku hasn’t been a winger in quite some time. While the former Paris Saint-Germain talent may have arrived in Leipzig and spent his first two seasons playing as a more traditional winger, he’s spent the last two seasons developing into something more like a false No.9. And in that time he’s bagged 36 league goals in just 59 games. In the season that’s just past, Nkunku finished joint-top of the goal-scoring charts, with a rate of 0.76 goals per 90. Which is almost twice what Chelsea’s most efficient goal scorer João Félix (0.4 per 90) managed this season.
If used correctly, Nkunku could prove to be an exceptional player for Chelsea next season and if Pochettino can get the France international playing the kind of football he’s been offering for RB Leipzig over the past four seasons then the Stamford Bridge club may have already signed the talisman they’ve been looking for for quite some time.
