The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has raised issues in regards to the prioritization of the development of a nationwide cathedral over essential instructional and infrastructural wants in Ghana.
Mahama expressed scepticism over the choice, stating that even God wouldn’t prioritize a cathedral over investments in schooling.
He highlighted the significance of addressing urgent instructional and infrastructural challenges earlier than embarking on tasks just like the nationwide cathedral.
During a public lecture at Wisconsin University, Mahama responded to inquiries about his stance on finishing the nationwide cathedral if elected president.
He clarified that the dedication to construct the cathedral stemmed from a private promise made by President Akufo-Addo to God, reasonably than a divine directive.
The former President argued that if given the chance to allocate $400 million, investing in textbooks for college kids or upgrading important infrastructure resembling the one highway from Accra to Cape Coast to a twin carriageway would doubtless yield larger advantages for the nation.
“For me, the nationwide cathedral was a covenant any individual made with God, a person. He stated he swore to God that if he grew to become president, he would construct a cathedral for him. From my perspective, it’s his promise to construct a home for God.
“I’m certain that if he actually had requested God what he wished him to do with $400 million; I don’t assume God would have chosen a cathedral when $400 million may have offered textbooks for all our college students. I don’t assume God would have requested you for a cathedral once we may have used the cash to dualise the highway from Accra to Cape Coast. People die day-after-day on that highway as a result of it’s a single highway.
“So, God didn’t ask for it, somebody promised it to God, it was a personal promise and if I have $400 million God will be angry with me if I use it to build that cathedral. I am not going to take taxpayers’ money or borrow $400 million from any source to build this cathedral,” he stated.
