GPHA reprimands officers who engaged in altercation with Immigration Service personnel
The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has stated that its safety officers who have been captured on video partaking in altercation with Ghana Immigration Service officers have been reprimanded.
This is contained in a press launch dated May 15, 2024 and signed by the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager, Abena Serwah Opoku Fosu.
“GPHA takes full responsibility for the actions of our security personnel involved, who have since been reprimanded,” a portion of the press launch learn.
It could be recalled that on Monday May 13, 2024, an altercation occurred on board MV MSC DYMPHNA between GPHA safety personnel and immigration officers which escalated to the immigration workplace on the Authority Building at Terminal 3.
The incident stemmed from the immigration officers’ failure to declare a bundle acquired from the vessel which contravenes Standard Operating Procedures established by the International Ships and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code and protocols. The insistence of GPHA safety officers on adherence to safety procedures led to the altercation.
“While some media studies have sensationalized the incident, we acknowledge that it might have been dealt with extra successfully to stop escalation. GPHA prioritizes the security and safety of all stakeholders and condemns the behaviour displayed by each events concerned.
The administration of GPHA met with representatives from Ghana Immigration Service and Ghana Maritime Authority to debate the problem and have come to an amicable answer which incorporates, however not restricted to periodic training and orientation of all state businesses in tandem with evolving maritime safety procedures and protocols,” Madam Abena Fosu wrote.
