The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has defined why the federal government has, over the previous seven years, resorted to digitalizing Ghana’s economic system.
Speaking on the twentieth version of the Ghana Club 100 Awards in Accra on Friday, Dr. Bawumia defined that the federal government inherited a largely casual economic system which made room for sure ills hindering the transformation of the economic system.
“Before you can build an economy that is going to be transformational, policies that are going to be transformational, you need to take care of major problems that are in the informal economy.
“When we got here into workplace, we have been going through some main challenges within the space of the casual economic system”, Dr. Bawumia said.
Dr. Bawumia added that an informal economy allows indiscipline into the society with “no vital penalties for unhealthy actions”.
“You have a society the place corruption prevails, you could have lawlessness. You have a tax dodging society, you could have an unbanked society. You have a mortgage compensation society, identification fraud; that’s folks assuming the identities of others or pretend identities, lack of tackle programs, age dishonest, pretend insurance coverage, pretend delivery certificates, no passport, ghost employees on authorities payroll, and many others”, he expounded.
These ills of the informal economy, Dr. Bawumia stressed, makes it difficult for an economy to transform.
“That is why we got down to formalize the economic system to be sure that the economic system labored on clear programs and that space of formalization of the economic system, we relied closely on digitization of the economic system to formalize the economic system.”
On this journey of formalizing the economy through digitalization, Dr. Bawumia noted, “we have now been shifting very steadily and we have now made a number of progress on this explicit space”.
Dr. Bawumia also highighted the significant role the Ghana Card has played in the formalization of the economy.
“Of course, the anchor for this digitalization programme has been the Ghana Card that we issued. And as we speak, we have now enrolled over 17 million folks to the Ghana Card. We have linked all financial institution accounts to the Ghana Card, linked all sim playing cards to the Ghana Card. Your tax identification quantity is your Ghana Card. Your NHIS quantity is your Ghana Card. We have linked the Ghana Card quantity to the Controller and Accountant General Department payroll.
“Today, we are seeing this increasing formalization of the economy as a result of digitalization…What all of this is doing is that…it makes the systems clearer. It reduces corruption because you can apply for services, buy electricity, get a licence, get a passport without going to meet any who will ask for bribe.”
Dr. Bawumia burdened the necessity for these vital transformational programmes to proceed to boost Ghana’s financial growth.
